1. WELCOME TO THE FAMILY NET

Welcome to famnet, the Family Underground Network [FUN]! Glad to have you aboard!
This is a closed list that operates for the benefit of family members of USAFA cadets.
The foundation of this net is for the support of our cadets and their families. A valid USAFA affiliation is required in order to join and remain. If you are the parent of a current USAFA cadet or new appointee, you have an affiliation. In addition to cadet and appointee parents, we have parents of graduates, some grandparents, some Academy staff and cadet sponsors.
The famnet comes in two flavors - DELUGE and DIGEST.
- DELUGE -
Each famnet message is sent to you individually. Expect an average of 20 to 80+ messages per day.
- DIGEST -
We store 20 messages, then send them to you as one big email. Expect an average of 1 to 3+ digest emails per day.
This family has over 1000 members of diverse backgrounds and beliefs. Please respect these differences, and treat everyone with the same respect as a loved family member.

A. SUBSCRIPTION FEE
This listserv is run on a private server. Each members pays an annual subscription fee of $25 per subscribed email address. Subscriptions coincide with the academic year and are due in advance by September. Any member signing on after September still pays for the full year which ends August 31. If payment is not received within 15 days of signup, the account is automatically suspended until payment is received and posted.
If you are the parent of a New Appointee, your first billing cycle does not begin until September. In other words, your famnet membership is FREE until your cadet begins the academic year.

3. MANAGING YOUR ACCOUNT VIA THE INTERNET

The first time, use the 'Forgot your username...?' option. You will receive your specific Username and Password via email. Use that information to login.
From the internet based form, you can
- View your current account status and information
- View your payment history
- Activate and deactivate your account (temporarily)
- Decide between Deluge and Digest forms of email delivery
- Change you email address
- Change you personal information (name, address, phone number, etc).
- Change you Username and Password
- Remove yourself permanently from the list

4. GUIDELINES - DO(s) and DON'T(s)

The DO(s) and DON'T(s) for Family-Underground-Net members:
DO identify yourself at the end of your messages. Sign off with your name, Cadet(first name, last if different, squadron, and graduation year), and your city and state please.
DO refrain from discussing religious, political or personal differences. If you want to argue/disagree/get angry about such things, take it to private e-mail. There are clearly no winners. There is a PrayerNet available for those interested.
DON'T Flame (the use of inflammatory, invective, or obscene language) as it will not be tolerated. Diverse viewpoints are encouraged - hostility and arguing about those
viewpoints is not! If you *must* persue it - take it to private e-mail. Please remember that most of the members of this list do meet face to face on Parent's Weekend.
DON'T forward an email unless you have the originator's permission to do so.
Should you hear of a tragic news event concerning any of the cadets, please DON'T ask about it on the net. If you have questions or information regarding the incident, your point of contact is the Family Net Advisory Committee FNAC@falconpride.com
DON'T solicit on the net. Commercial ads are not allowed. However, occasional advertisments of parents club fundraisers are okay. Members who find a good deal and want to share it with the list may do so. If you have information of a commercial nature you may occasionally post a URL address for a website or FTP site where the product or service may be described, but no solicitation will be allowed.

5. FNAC - FAMILY NET ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The Family Net Advisory Committee (FNAC) was set up many years ago to help the net run smoothly. The FNAC assists in the establishment and enforcement of famnet guidelines. They are not the "net police" but rather are concerned members trying to keep the family net moving in a positive direction. The FNAC consists of current cadet parents, grad parents, Liason Officers, ect.
The FNAC should also be your FIRST POINT OF CONTACT regarding any emergency situation or serious incident relating to the Academy and/or cadets. We try to confirm new information through appropriate channels to ensure things are not posted on the net until properly or officially verified, or until an official statement from the Academy has been released. The Academy must be able to do their job regarding notification of first of kin without interference from, or pre-release through, the family net. This is very important and the FNAC takes it very seriously. Posting of accidents or serious incidents that involve cadet(s) or the Academy without first contacting the FNAC (fnac@falconpride.com) or doni (info@falconpride.com) is a BIG NO-NO. We want to keep rumor and gossip off the net whenever possible, especially when relating to emergency situations and serious incidents.
The FNAC is also the complaint department. If you have a problem with a policy of the family net, or if you truly have a problem with another famnet member or the famnet administration, you can email the FNAC as a whole (fnac@falconpride.com), or you may contact any one of the FNAC members directly.

6. HOW TO SEND MESSAGES TO FAMNET

To send messages to the famnet, address your messages to: famnet@falconpride.com
Please include descriptive subject lines, and keep your messages short, positive, and supportive.
IMPORTANT FOR DIGEST MEMBERS - If you receive your messages via the DIGEST method, DO NOT include the entire digest text in any of your replies. You may keep a small portion of the information in your message that you are replying to, but the remainder of the DIGEST message must be removed before you send it. You MUST ALSO change the subject line to reflect the nature of your message or reply. If you don't alter the subject line when replying to Digest messages, the computer will automatically reject your message and it will not be sent to the family net.

7. HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE AND RESUBSCRIBE (without web access)

If you don't have web access, alternate email based instructions are summarized below.
- To UNSUBSCRIBE -
DELUGE Members -
To UNSUBSCRIBE from the deluge method, send a message to famnet@falconpride.com with the single word UNSUBSCRIBE as the subject line. Do not include anything else on the subject line. That means no spaces, other characters or words on the subject line. Since we dealing with an automated process here, correct spelling is very important. When done correctly, you will receive an automated response telling you that your unsubscribe was successful. If done wrong, the listserv will think your improperly formatted command message is a normal famnet message and it will send a copy of your message to all the members.
DIGEST Members -
To UNSUBSCRIBE from the digest method, send a message to famnet@falconpride.com with the two words UNSUBSCRIBE DIGEST as the subject line. There is ONE SPACE between the word UNSUBSCRIBE and the word DIGEST, but do not include anything else on the subject line. That means no other spaces, characters, or words on the subject line. Since we dealing with an automated process here, correct spelling is very important. When done correctly, you will receive an automated response telling you that your unsubscribe was successful. If done wrong, the listserv will think your improperly formatted command message is a normal famnet message and it will send a copy of your message to all the members.
- To RESUBSCRIBE (all members)-
Since this a closed members-only list, resubscribes must be accomplished personally by the famnet listserv admin. Therefore, resubscribes are NOT an automated process.
To resubscribe, send a message to info@falconpride with RESUBSCRIBE in the subject line. Since resubscribe messages are sent to a real human being, spelling, spaces, and other characters are no problem. Note that you must send this to a different email address than the unsubscribe commands.

To send a command to the listserv, send a message to famnet@falconpride.com with one of the following commands in the subject line.

DIR - sends a listing of files available in the list's GET directory
GET filename1.txt,filename2.txt - sends the requested file(s)
HELP - sends you a copy of THIS welcome letter file.

For example, if you want to receive a directory of all the old Digest messages, send a message to famnet@falconpride.com with the single word
DIR
in the subject line. You will receive a message with the names of all the available Digest files.
As another example, lets say you got the directory and now want to retrieve the file called Digest1234.txt
Simply send a message to famnet@falconpride with the two words
GET Digest1234.txt
in the subject line. There is one space between the word GET and the word Digest1234.txt
Do not use any other spaces or other characters anywhere. There are no spaces in the word Digest1234.txt And yes, the (dot) in Digest1234.txt must be there. When done correctly, you will receive an email with the requested file attached.

This site is strictly for current famnet members only. To protect the privacy of our members, please do not give out the username or password to anyone. The username and password are changed on a periodic basis. Members with active accounts may ask for the current password from info@falconpride.com. Or, better yet, send a HELP command (see 8.OTHER LISTSERV COMMANDS). The HELP command sends you a current copy of THIS welcome letter. The new username and password will be in it when changed.
